Data Center Decommissioning in Amsterdam
AMS-IX says it was established in 1994, after academic institutions at the Science Park in Amsterdam sought to exchange data directly. It says it has become one of the largest internet exchange points globally, connecting internet service providers, content providers and streaming services. NIKHEF Amsterdam stands on Science Park in Amsterdam. For a business that has placed equipment in the city over many years, that history means racks that have accumulated hardware across several generations, and a point where some of it has to leave.
Data center decommissioning is the removal and disposal of retired hardware. Reboot Monkey performs it as a third-party services operator inside data centers that other companies own and run, so the work is planned around the building you are in and not around a site of our own. The operator of your facility owns and runs the building, including its power, cooling and access policy, and Reboot Monkey engineers work under the operator's site rules.

Our Data Center Decommissioning Services
A decommissioning job in Amsterdam starts with an agreed list of what is leaving. Removal is scheduled with you in advance, including any out-of-hours or weekend windows the facility requires. Reboot Monkey engineers then work through the racks against that list.
The work covers the equipment and the material that travels with it:
- Servers, switches and storage arrays
- Their cabling and rail kits
- Recording of serial numbers, asset tags and rack positions against your asset list
- A log entry for every item as it is removed
Why Reboot Monkey
Decommissioning is a records exercise as much as a physical one. Because every item is logged as it is removed and matched to your asset list, you can reconcile what left the rack with what your inventory says was there, and a missing or unexpected item shows up at the point of removal and not months later.
A second, briefed Reboot Monkey engineer is named as backup for every customer site, so the job does not depend on a single person being available on the day. If retired equipment then needs to be wiped, shredded, collected or considered for resale, that is handled as IT asset disposition, with data wiping, on-site shredding or degaussing, collection and transport, and resale or buyback quoted case by case. The work is processed by Reboot Monkey staff in a partner's processing facility or on your site.
Prices are quoted on request and depend on the customer and the size of the job. As of 2026, Reboot Monkey's field engineers work in 190 countries and more than 400 locations.

Decommissioning often sits alongside other changes to the same racks. If some of the retired equipment is being replaced or relocated instead of disposed of, a planned [Server Migration in Amsterdam](/en/server-migration/netherlands/amsterdam/) moves it between racks, rooms or facilities. If the capacity you are vacating is being rebuilt elsewhere in the city, [Colocation in Amsterdam](/en/colocation/netherlands/amsterdam/) covers the rack space that replaces it.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does data center decommissioning cover in Amsterdam?
Data center decommissioning covers the removal and disposal of retired hardware. In Amsterdam this means servers, switches, storage arrays, and their cabling and rail kits. Serial numbers, asset tags and rack positions are recorded against your asset list, every item is logged as it is removed, and removal is scheduled with you in advance, including any out-of-hours or weekend windows the facility requires.
Do you work in every datacenter in Amsterdam?
Reboot Monkey engineers work in any facility in Amsterdam where the customer has equipment and access, under the operator's own access and safety rules. The customer adds the engineers to the facility's access list before the first visit.
How fast can Reboot Monkey respond in Amsterdam?
Incidents and unplanned requests are handled under a 1-hour, around-the-clock incident response SLA. There is also a 15 minute premium response available where technicians are stationed on-site, as a paid add-on. On-site, dispatch and resolution times, priority tiers, and planned or scheduled work are agreed per site in the service agreement.
How is Reboot Monkey different from the facility operator's own staff?
Facility operators' own technicians work for the building. Reboot Monkey engineers work for the customer: they are independent from facility operators (not Equinix SmartHands, not NTT staff), follow the customer's instructions, and the same team can cover several buildings in the city under one agreement.
How do I get started with data center decommissioning in Amsterdam?
Send the site, the equipment and the task through the contact form. Reboot Monkey replies with a quote and an engineer plan for that facility. Once agreed, the customer adds the engineers to the facility's access list and the data center decommissioning work is scheduled under the operator's rules.
